Dear Sumud Friends, welcome to our fifth Sumud session on the First Intifada, which started in 1987, and the so-called “peace process” of the 1990s. This is the period when Palestinians rose up in a largely non-violent, grassroots movement to demand their right to self-determination in the face of the Israeli government’s Apartheid system of racialized inequality. It is also the period in which “peace” became the headline for a series of negotiations that in reality had little to do with realizing peace and justice in this land.
Please post below any reflections or questions you have before the session as you’re reading Chapter 5 of Khalidi or reviewing the materials in the toolkit, which includes several documentaries/movies. Consider whether you’d like to post below anonymously or first name only. See you on Thursday!
